Wow, today is the first game of the 2015 Major League Baseball World Series! Tonight, the Kansas City Royals host the New York Mets at Kaughman Stadium. .
The 1st World Series game was played in 1903 between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Americans (Red Sox). Boston won in the best of a 9 game series. Since that time, the New York Yankees have won 27 times followed by the St. Louis Cardinals with 11 wins, & the Boston Red Sox with 8 wins. The New York Giants, Philadelphia Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Dodgers, & Cincinnati Reds each have 5 World Series Titles. The Detroit Tigers and Oakland Athletics both have 4 wins each. The Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, & San Francisco Giants each have 3 wins. The Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, Florida Marlins, Minnesota Twins, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, & Toronto Blue Jays each have 2 World Series Titles. The Anaheim Angels, Arizona Diamondbacks, Atlanta Braves, Boston Braves, Brooklyn Dodgers, Milwaukee Braves, Kansas City Royals, & the Washington Senators have each won 1 World Series Title.
Major League Baseball teams are divided into the American League and the National League. Each of those Leagues have 3 Divisions; East, West, and Central. Each year players report to Spring Training during the month of March. In early April, when camp breaks, they are ready to start their season. Games start in early April and run through early October. Each team hoping to make it to the World Series! After the regular season games are finished in October, it is time for the play-off games to begin. The highest ranked team from each division in each league, along with a wild card from each league, play against each other for a chance to go to the World Series.
The earned Wild Card Seed and the next best team in the League play 1 game for a chance to go to the play-off games. This makes 4 teams from each League (Wild Card, East, West, & Central). The #1 Seed plays the Wild Card and the #2 & #3 Seeds play each other in the best of a 5 game series. Then the winners of those games play off in a best of 7 game series to determine the League Champion. Once the National League Champion and the American League Champion have been determined, it is time for the World Series. The New York Mets are in the National League East Division and the Kansas City Royals are in the American League Central Division.
The World Series is the best of 7 games. Since 2003, the home field advantage is determined by the winner of the All-Star game for that season. This year the American League won the All Star game, so the KC Royals have the home field advantage.
The New York Mets won World Series Titles in 1969 & 1986. The Kansas City Royals won their only World Series Title in 1985 in what was named the I-70 Series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Kansas City Royals were founded in 1969. They have played in the same Missouri Stadium since their founding. From 1969-1972 the Stadium was named Royals Stadium. It was renamed in 1973 as Kaughman Stadium and maintains that name to date. This season marks the Royals 4th World Series appearance. They had appearances in 1980, 1985, and 2014. Winning only the 1985 World Series Title. The Kansas City Royals have had many great players through the years, but only one named to the Baseball Hall of Fame as a Royal. That is long time 3rd baseman George Brett.
In 1962 the New York Mets were founded to replace the National League departing teams of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants. The Mets’ color scheme came from Dodgers’ Blue and Giants’ Orange. The Mets’ home field for 1962 & 1963 were the Polo Grounds. From 1964-2008 Shea Stadium was home of the Mets. Since 2009, the Mets’ home stadium is Citi Field. This season marks the Mets’ 5th World Series appearance. They had appearances in 1969, 1973, 1986, & 2000. Their last World Series appearance in 2000 was against cross town rivals, the New York Yankees, in what was known as the Subway Series. The New York Mets Hall of Famers include: Tom Seaver, Richie Ashburn, Yogi Berra (Player & Manager), Gary Carter, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, Nolan Ryan, Duke Snider, Warren Spahn, & Casey Stengel (elected as a manager).
As the 2015 World Series starts tonight, we wish both teams good luck. Being from Missouri, we want to say “Go Royals”!
